Pediatric Care

Many parents have concerns about their children's health care which naturopathic doctors are uniquely prepared to address. These include the overuse of antibiotics, and how to treat a variety of common complaints without having to resort to medications which may have undesirable side effects.

The overuse of antibiotics is a concern for all of us. Because many children experience frequent ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis and other illnesses, and because bacteria are becoming more resistant to antibiotics, repeated courses of antibiotics are often prescribed. Naturopathic doctors use homeopathy, herbal medicines and therapeutic nutrition to treat these conditions and others whenever possible. Of course, in some cases antibiotics will be required. In those cases, naturopathic doctors would either prescribe those antibiotics within the scope of their practice or refer to another doctor if appropriate.

In addition, many common childhood illnesses are viral and do not respond to antibiotics. In those cases, naturopathic doctors employ natural therapeutics to support and strengthen the child’s immune system and to hasten a speedy recovery. Prevention of illness is also emphasized. Educating parents and children about healthy diet, exercise and vitamin and mineral supplementation is part of any program to prevent illness and optimize health.
